Making our way to Victoria, we stopped in Duncan to check out the recommendation of an Instagram foodie, Just Jakes.
The interior of the restaurant is cozy, and homey, with art plastered on the walls and lots of wood and brick aesthetics. To start I sampled one of the local house brews, the Shawnigan Irish Ale, a “full-bodied red ale with sweet caramel malt and discreet hops, available in a glass, pint or pitcher. The glass, at $3.75 was just right for a light lunch, and the ale was delicious. Not too hoppy, as I’m not a fan, but creamy with a hint of the caramel.
To eat I tried out one of the summer specials, beef and shrimp skewers with a house barbecue sauce, and the greek salad. Siddall went with the caprese salad, a side of cheese toast, and…wait for it, the crab cakes. Girl has a crab cake obsession.
The greek salad screamed fresh, and the dressing was delish. It was served the way I like a green salad to be served, sans lettuce, but on a bed of romaine for presentation. The skewers are where my lunch went flat. The beef and shrimp were cooked well, and flavoured well, but on the cold side and the barbecue sauce was just kind of dumped on top in an unappealing fashion. Might of been better served to have it on the side.
The caprese salad was fresh with a nice presentation, but the real winner of the day were the crab cakes. Served with “southwest spices”, they certainly had that kind of flair, and the addition of cilantro really complimented the cake. To top it off, they were served with a mango salsa – would. eat. again.
