Everybody has a culinary happy place. A place where the food is always tasty, the beer always cold, the people watching always fascinating, and the memories, well, memorable.
For me that happy place is the Ship & Anchor.
I could write at least 47 blogs to the tune of “How do I love thee” about the Ship, but we’ll stick to this one in support of one of the many good causes the ship gets behind.
So, YYC Burger Battle ended yesterday. Another great Calgary initiative raising funds for Kids Up Front Calgary and Grow Calgary. Did I get to as many places as I would have liked? No. Was hoping to hit up three last night, yes procrastinator, but logistics, of which I’ll cover in my next blog, made it a wee bit difficult. So for me, the Ship’s Banger Burger was a clear winner.
The Banger included a 6 oz. patty, Spolumbos banger, pulled pork, double smoked bacon and aged cheddar on a homemade cheese bun with homemade BBQ sauce, garlic aioli, pickled red onion and arugula.
First things first, this thing is a beast! It was served on a wooden platter so they burger could show off in all its splendor. The presentation was lovely, but the taste experience was even lovelier.
The beef was juicy and flavourful, the sausage well-cooked, and the sweet of the pulled pork and smoky of the bacon, divine. I’m not usually big on lettuce on a burger, but arugula is a bit of a rebel green and the fresh, peppery punches of flavour were just what the doctor ordered.
In short, I crushed it.
Can’t wait to see what their featured burger is next year, but am happy to dive into a few loaded Ship Burgers until that time comes.
