Siddall and I were in Fernie awhile back visiting the in-laws who recommended a local favourite, Freshies as a light lunch stop.
Freshies is my kind of hangout, a little kitsch meets comfort with local art on the walls, a woodsy feel and cutsie signage all around. Plus there was a reading nook with comfy chairs, and who doesn’t love a reading nook. Or comfy chairs.
Freshies is set up as a grab and go, but you can also sit down and eat your wares at one of the 25 or so seats. There’s also a kids corner to keep the tots preoccupied.
Siddall went with the turkey wrap, which was roughly the size of my head and came complete with all the fixins one would find at the Thanksgiving table, including cranberries. Instead of gravy though, the wrap was served with a creamy, balsamic type dressing that was pretty tasty.
I went with the veggie crepe – a bit of a departure for this meat eater, but well worth it. The crepe was stuffed with spinach, mushroom, tomato and feta, all hella fresh. There was some sort of delightful hot sauce drizzled on top that I would have liked a lot more of, but other than that, a successful dish.
When visiting, my sister-in-law swears by the Stash Bar – looks like the result of a brownie making sweet love to one of those condensed milk cereal bars. I didn’t try it out, but Siddall and Donna were all over it, so looks like a keeper.
