Just a small town girl, livin’ in a foodie world, up the Highway 2, goin’ to Roy’s Place.
So I just gutted Journey there, but, I did grow up in Claresholm so am very well acquainted with Roy’s Place, a Claresholm institution.
Sadly, Roy is no longer with us, having passed away some years ago, but under the watchful eye of current owner and chef Keith Carlson, the restaurant located right on Highway 2 has thrived.
Carlson is a local celebrity having made it to the final round of the Food Network’s Chopped Canada, and had the restaurant featured on You Gotta Eat Here. Disclaimer: I was invited and had to bow out, and was crushed. There went my 15 minutes. But my pal BBJ, rocked it on her cinnamon bun comment.

Anyway, Siddall and I headed to Roy’s with Papa Bear the other night for some good ol’ diner home cooking.
I’ll usually chow down on the prime rib or chicken fingers (they have an amazing mustard sauce), but on this particular night the chicken fried steak caught my eye. Mostly because two of my favourite things are in the name: fried. And steak. Papa Bear ordered the same, must be genetic.
This dish is no slouch. The portion is hella healthy with not one, but two chicken fried cutlets. The breading was crisp and light with rosemary making its presence known in a polite and tasty way.
The winner of the dish was definitely the gravy. I wanted to bottle it and take it on a roadtrip. The biscuit was warm and fresh, but not as fluffy as I like. Fries were hot and amazesauce when dipped in the gravy.
Siddall went with the Sirloin Steak. She got a giant starter ceasar, which was a bit overdressed for her liking, so I got to finish it off. The dish was colourful and the loaded potato lovely, but her medium rare was a smidge overdone. C’est le vie.
There’s no question we’ll be back at Roy’s, there’s just a question of crushing the chicken fried steak again, or trying something new.
