Sometimes you visit a place in need of a quick lunch, and feel you’ve just scratched the surface of said eatery. The Royal Duke Hotel in Okotoks falls under that category for me.
A couple weekends ago I was in a CSSC Sno-Pitch tourney at the Okotoks On-Deck facility. With a couple hours between games we dashed into town to the Royal Duke on the advice of my bestie, who grew up in town.
The Royal Duke is my kind of joint. Old architecture, lots of wood like ye olde timey Scottish pub. Pictures you say? Well, I missed out on the decor this time so my apologies, but here’s my beef dip:
First thing, props for having shoestring fries. I am a sucker for shoestring fries and they were hot and crispy with just enough salt. I also added a side of mayo ($1), for dipping, because I’m cool that way.
The bread was fresh and there was a good meat to bun ratio, but the beef definitely needed the moisture of the au jus as it was a tad on the dry side.
I wish I’d gone with the Alberta Horseradish Melt, which comes complete with sauteed mushrooms and onions with a horseradish mayo. A friend ordered it and it looked divine.
But, next time. Because this is certainly somewhere I’d like to visit again. And when I return, I’ll take more pictures.
Total with drink and added mayo: $19.16
