Jerusalem Shawarma – Calgary

Pretty much anywhere you go in Calgary, you could throw a stone and hit a shawarma place. The trick however, is finding a great one.

A lot of people swear by Jimmy’s A&A, which I’ll admit I’ve yet to try. My personal favourites are Tazza in Bridgeland, and Village Pita Bakery in Short Pants Plaza.

However, seeing as though I live near neither and was craving shawarma the other night, Siddall and I hopped in the car to Jerusalem Shawarma in Harvest Hills.

I haven’t explored the area too much, other than to visit the nearby T&T Market and bottle depot, but there are eateries for days in the area.

The first good sign about Jerusalem was it was packed to the gills. With seating for about 20-25 in a small space, it’s a very cozy sit down but perfect for grab and go. Also cozy, was the situation behind the counter, but the four or five people back there were working like a well-oiled machine. I ordered the medium chicken shawarma and had them add two falafel for good measure. Because we’re so original, the wife also ordered chicken, sans falafel.

So, not exactly Robert Capa over here, but look at the size of that thing!

You get your choice of toppings and sauces and they are not stingy. I wonder what a large shawarma looks like as the medium is a monstrosity. The medley of flavours of the chicken, pickled turnips, peppers, parsley and sauces was magical, and I couldn’t finish the beast.

It was a tasty shawarma. Not my favourite, but darn tasty.

Two medium shawarma (one with falafel), and a mango juice: $22

Atmosphere: 3/5
Service: 5/5
